Meet Sophia Fitch

Our Student Spotlight is on 12 year old Sophia Fitch, a member of our Junior Instructor Team and 3rd Degree L1 Black Belt at the Ojai TaeKwonDo Academy and 7th grader at Matilija Junior High.

Sophia started TaeKwonDo when she was 5 years old and her dad wanted her to learn self-defense. When he gave her a choice to continue or not, Sophia jumped at staying in the program because it was fun. She says that TKD is a great way to make new friends, be in great shape, develop self-esteem and learn self-control, plus she gets to do it with her 9 year old sister Mady, who is a Black Belt 1st Degree L4.

What are some of her favorites?

  • Food: pasta with red sauce
  • TV show: Cutthroat Kitchen - Sophia also enjoys cooking with her Grandma who is a chef.
  • Dessert: Hot fudge sundaes
  • Leisure activity at home: Reading - Sophia has finished the entire Harry Potter series
  • School subject: Social Studies - teacher Mrs. Vasquez makes the subject fun and interesting.
  • TKD activity: Sparring
  • Favorite destination: Hawaii

If Sophia could fly anywhere right now it would be to Hawaii where her family vacationed last Thanksgiving break. A fan of warm weather and beautiful ocean life, Sophia used to be wary of fish, but after a week of snorkeling in Maui, she discovered that fish are harmless and actually afraid of you. She also enjoyed snorkeling in Catalina when she went there as a 6th grader on their CIMI field trip. The night dive with the bio luminescence was super cool.

At home, Sophia's current pets are two cats and two dumbo rats. One of her cats was rescued as a kitten from the Oxnard Humane Society. She saw the cute rats in a pet store and immediately wanted to take them home where she says they are the nicest pets.
